INDIA IS HOME TO THE LARGEST NUMBER OF HUNGRY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD AND ABOUT 214 MILLION PEOPLE OF THE COUNTRY ARE CHRONICALLY FOOD INSECURE.
Over 7000 Indians die of hunger every day. Over 25 Lakh Indians die of hunger every year.Over
20 crore Indians will sleep hungry tonight. 1/3rd of the world’s hungry live in India. 212 million are undernourished. 836 million Indians survive on less than Rs. 20 a day.
It is estimated that 46% of children below three years are underweight, 79% of children aged 6- 35 months have Anemia, 23% have a low birth weight and 68 out of 1000 die before the age of one year, and 33% of women and 28% of men have a Body Mass Index (BMI) below normal just because they do not have enough food to eat.
194 million people in India today do not have enough food to eat, the largest in any one country in the world. According to the Global Hunger Index 2021, India falls under the ‘serious’ hunger category with a rank of 101 among 116 countries.
